What does “jordboere” mean?

Jordboere (pronounced “yord boar eh”) means “earthlings” in Norwegian. I picked this name for a few reasons.

  1. I wanted to pick a name that was meaningful to me. My grandfather is from Sandnessjøen, Norway. My Scandinavian heritage (as my grandmother is from Pori, Finland) is something that is very powerful and a driving force in my life. I wanted a name to represent my love for this culture.

  2. “Earthlings” is a 2005 American documentary, narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, exposing the world’s use of animals as a means for food, entertainment, clothing, and research. This film is highly regarded in the vegan and animal rights community as a powerful medium for communicating the magnitude that humanity exploits animals in every possible way.

  3. The idea of “earthlings” presented in the documentary is something that I find beautiful and incredibly unifying. To understand the idea of “earthlings” is to understand that we all inhabit the earth together and I think the film summarizes that well:

They are not brethren; they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth.” - Earthlings, 2005

And so I hope you join me in relieving the suffering that we impose on our fellow earthlings.

With much kindness and love,

Ava Pia
